Turner and Young colliery owners

The workforce of "Turner and Young" at Prestwick colliery circa 1900. Joshua Turner is seated second from the left in the front row with Robert Turner third from the left in the front row.
Seated first on the left is James Taylor who went on to sink two new shafts for the  Prestwick Coal Company in 1904 when Turner and Young sold their interest.

  1. Is James Taylor in this photograph the father of
Stan Taylor and possibly my Great grandfather?

  2. I'm certain your correct. If you would like to know more I could put you in contact with Taylor relatives who no doubt could tell you more. Send me an email to prestwick.miner@btinternet.com and I'll confidentially give you contact details.

  3. Hi.

My name is Gary Turner and I'm the great grandson of the Robert Turner in the center of the picture. Thank you so much for publishing the photo of the Turner and Young crew. There's not a lot on the web regarding the Prestwick Pit and so it's great that you've made the effort to make this available.

My grandfather, born in 1898, was the eldest son of Robert Turner and hence was also named Robert Turner. Following the sale of the mine most (if not all) of Robert Turner's family emigrated to North America with the girl(s) finally settling in the US and the father and sons remaining in western Canada, which is where I live.

If you have any more information on the details of the Prestwick pit and/or the "Prestwick Pit Houses" settlement or would like to have some additional information regarding Robert Turner's family, I would appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks again for your interest and efforts.

    Gary

    1. The photo of the Turner's of Prestwick Colliery was of interest as Joshua was my great grandfather. His eldest child Jane was married to John William Wood and lived at Carr View until her death in 1956. I often used to stay with her during the school holidays and can remember the house having no electric lights.
My grandmother was Annie Turner the fourth child of Joshua and Mary Jane.
If Gary Turner in Canada reads this I would be delighted if he got in touch, I'm sure he could fill in some gaps in the family history.

  4. A history of mining in Prestwick was published in Ponteland local History Society's 2000 publication "Pont Island News" It was written by J Michael Taylor.

I have already had contact with 2 of your relatives one living in Australia and one Canadian citizen living in Singapore.
